Become a Chef
Being a chef is no easy job. Here one has to be “physical” all the time – keep on your feet most of the time, stir, knead, chop food, handle a kitchen staff of at least 20 – 30 people, (sometimes) handle orders from customers, and all this in an environment that is hot, not only from flaming tempers but also the real heat of ovens and gas burners. Customers tend to be hungry, critical, unforgiving, and fussy when they eat at reasonably good restaurants. Hence it becomes the onus of the chef to appease them with well presented and tasty food. While all this would seem a difficult proposition, being a chef is a very rewarding, pleasurable and artistic job.
Thanks to the above prerequisites, training and experience is essential to become a chef. There are quite a few culinary arts schools that specialize in training its students in the nuances of cooking and presenting tasty food as well as handling a team of skilled and unskilled workers. The job of a chef does not involve only cooking; in fact it starts with maintaining the daily and monthly inventory of food products received like pork, seafood, beef, poultry, dairy, and produce. This also depends to a very great extent on the kind of restaurant one gets employed in. Large chain restaurants may order from a central commissary but smaller restaurants order in lesser quantities to take advantage of the seasonal fruits and vegetables. A trained chef should be able to handle both of the situations pretty well. Read the rest of this entry »
